September 2019 – Surpass Community Webinar – How we improve the User Experience through testing

Every person that uses a piece of software potentially does it in a different way. We’re influenced by a number of things in our day-to-day lives, and this can create a conundrum for designers of new products. Gain a fascinating insight into how the User Interface of Surpass is designed to create an intuitive, stress free experience for item writers, test administrators, and candidates with Lee and Richard from BTL’s Design Team.

Over the course of the discussion the pair discuss the design principles used by the team as well as how extensive user testing and research allows them to observe how users of the software might interact with new features, and identify potential stumbling blocks to efficiency and mental load that need to be addressed before a feature is developed.

December 2018 – Surpass Community Webinar with telc Language Tests.

If you missed the fascinating training workshop with telc at Surpass Conference 2018, you’ll be glad to hear they agreed to co-host this Surpass Community Webinar.
Captured live at their offices in Frankfurt, Germany, we talk about their journey into e-assessment so far, and how moving from paper to on-screen has allowed them to truly innovate. Using the tools in Surpass, they have creatively updated traditional questions to make a ‘fun’ test that is both more in tune with their candidates regular ways of working,

but most importantly, has the psychometrics to back up it’s equivalence and sit alongside their heritage as language testing experts.

October 2018 – Surpass Pre-Release Webinar – New features coming October 2018

In this webinar, Ben Brady and Georgie Page discuss some of the new features coming in the latest release of Surpass.
Highlights include:
A new Likert survey item type, and enhancements to the Multiple Choice survey item; an ‘Advanced’ mode in the Short Answer question type; the ability to move items between subjects; enhancements to the Bulk Schedule functionality to allow scheduling across multiple centres and for key-codes to be returned in a .csv file; and enhancements to the Media Library.

August 2018 – Surpass Pre-Release Webinar – New features coming August 2018

July 2018 – Accessibility in Assessment (including achieving Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 Level AA conformance in Surpass assessments)

Join the BTL team as we discuss the role we can all play in providing an accessible experience for candidates in assessment.

Leon Hampson & Isabel Holdsworth, from BTL’s Accessibility team, focus on how new features in our HTML Test Driver can deliver assessments to WCAG 2.0 Level AA and Section 508 conformance levels.

We look at some of the work that Leon, Isabel, and the team have been doing both for 508 and WCAG conformance, as well as their role in our Research and Development projects for improving the assessment experience for everybody.

Finally, proving that assessment content has an important part to play, Gillian Whitehouse, from AlphaPlus Consultancy, talks about best practice in question writing with examples on a recent adaptive national testing project.

April 2018: Surpass Community Assessment Case Study – TWI

Join us for a special case study brought to you live from the offices of TWI.
Over the course of 30 minutes, Maurice Whittaker and Abi Lowther shared how TWI have invested in summative assessment on an international scale, improving logistics and maximising test security. They also talk about the importance of a cultural fit when choosing an assessment company to work with, and the value of integration between Surpass and their other administration systems.


March 2018: Surpass & GDPR, a Surpass Community Update

As part of our commitment to meeting the requirements of GDPR, we have held client workshops to answer questions Surpass users may have about our service in relation to GDPR and associated security requirements. In this webinar, we will be providing a summary of those meetings, and giving those that could not attend an opportunity to find out more information.

Joining the webinar will be Kathryn Myers from our legal team and Clare Stubley, IT Security Manager at BTL. We will take you through this important topic by looking at data handling, storage, retention and deletion.

February 2018: Surpass Pre-Release Webinar

Features covered in this webinar:

  • The new ‘Task Management’ tab, which will allow you to create and assign authoring tasks.
  • Enhanced answer option sorting for MCQ & MRQ question types.
  • Version compare for items.
  • Minimal response settings for MRQ questions.
  • Secure File Attach for Bring-Your-Own-Device.
  • Pooled Test Times for multi-section exams.
  • Item content locks.
  • Section Review Panels for candidates in test.
We also introduce Item Response Theory (IRT) Scoring, a new way to grade candidates based on IRT values. Tom Gomersall, one of our psychometric specialists, will lead us into this section.


During the broadcast, two questions were asked and required clarification from members of the Surpass team directly involved in their development. We are happy to share these clarification points here:

Question 1: “Does the Secure File Attach work with the advanced option as well?”.

Brigitte has since clarified the following:

“Secure File Attach does not currently work with Advanced File Attach, but in the future the advanced functionality will be incorporated into the standard File Attach.”

Question 2: “Can you add a scheduled break in between two sections that share a timed pool?”.

After seeking clarification with the Product Owner for that feature, they offered the following response:

“If you create a test with a scheduled break in the middle of two pooled sections; when you finish the first section you go into the break, then when you enter the second section you have all the remaining time of the pool left.”
