We’re often told by Surpass users that one major benefit of being part of the community is the regular feature updates to the product as a result of collaboration between the BTL innovation team and client requests, based on changes taking place within the industry.
Since our last update article, in addition to the regular mail-outs by the documentation and account management teams, Surpass pre-release webinars have been used to introduce key upcoming features and give the Surpass community an opportunity to ask questions before the update is deployed. An archive of recordings is available at btl.com/surpass/pastwebinars. If you’re interested in receiving notifications about future webinars, please let us know via our contact form at: www.btl.com/contact-btl.
Below we look at some of the more recently added features that have been exciting the Surpass community:
Simplified Item Authoring Screens:
Recently, this has involved making small amendments to each Item Authoring screen to keep commonly used settings readily available, while additional options are neatly hidden. This means they remain efficiently accessible to all users, without imposing on those who don’t make use of them.
By introducing the Polygon Hotspot feature, you can now create more accurate and complex image areas as desired, greatly expanding the versatility of image-based questions.
Improvements to File Attach:
We’ve been working together with them to ensure features such as the ‘File Attach’ question type are robust, but also easy to use for both item authors and candidates.
Forward Only and Allow Item Review:
We are now offering the ability to control a candidate’s interaction with a test even further by introducing the ‘Allow Item Review’ setting. This allows candidates in Forward Only section to navigate back to previous questions they have answered in a read only format. This allows them to view their answers without changing them, which makes this features ideal for tests with connected questions.
In addition to related and ‘enemy’ items, Surpass now allows the test assembler to apply branching logic to a section made up of Multiple Choice and Multiple Response question types.
Improved PDF Viewer:
Following feedback from candidates, the PDF viewer now allows candidates to close the viewer and retain information such as highlighting for when it is re-opened later in the test. This allows the same document to be used efficiently across a number of questions.
Candidates are usually well prepared before taking their computer-based tests, however, we want to make sure that this method of testing in no way inhibits their ability to display their knowledge.
As more Advanced Question Types are being added to the examiner’s arsenal, it’s important candidates have the opportunity to practice using the test driver, You can now set up any item type as a ‘Sample Item’, which means that it can be added to an introduction section as a practice question. The candidate can interact with the item and provide an answer without it affecting their final score.
When delivering high-stakes examinations for your specialised industry, there are bound to be a range of commonly used acronyms or expressions that escape the usual methods of spellchecking.
In response to this common Surpass community headache, we’ve given users the ability to upload their own bespoke dictionaries, which will take effect across the whole instance.
New features for Roles and Workflow Statuses:
To cater for this need, we’ve introduced new functionality to allow your organisation to create new additional workflow statuses and custom permissions bespoke to your users’ needs. This is the perfect accompaniment to the custom ‘Roles’ feature.
Detailed Item History and User Audit Log:
Working in a collaborative environment also means it might sometimes be necessary to see who is making these changes.
In response to these Surpass community needs, we have further improved the Item History function to contain much more detailed information.
The Surpass API affords community organisations a great deal of flexibility when it comes to integrating the assessment platform with their other critical business processes.
These are just a few of the latest features to be added to Surpass. For all the latest information, contact your account manager or log in to the Surpass Learning Portal.
