BTL Engage is a technology designed to underpin the creation of interactive learning materials which are driven by an initial problem or question. The technology offers a range of different routes through the material, any one of which can be selected by the learner, according to their own view of their level of knowledge. For example, if the learner feels confident about the question he or she can simply attempt to answer it. If they have no idea what to do they can be shown how to solve the problem and if they have some ideas they can be guided through it. The latter is particularly interesting because mistakes can be highlighted immediately, providing instant feedback. This allows the learner to locate errors very precisely and focus their attention on resolving the problem.
Materials based on BTL Engage have been assembled into a number of different types of product, according to client requirements. Examples include QTS practice test material for the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), formative assessment materials, practice tests with feedback and adaptive tests with feedback.
The intention is to speed up and improve the quality of the learning process. BTL Engage is currently the subject of patent applications in both the UK and the US.
